Do you want a transmission with reduced lever effort, smoother shifting, overshift protection, an overdrive top gear and a hunk of warranty to boot? Well has Harley got the tranny for you!
The after-market has had a 6-speed tranny on sale for big twins for a couple of years now, but it was not a genuine, Milwaukee-made masterpiece. Now at last Harley has come out with a smooth-shifting six-speed tranny that will reduce RPM in top gear by 11% while still giving the same low ratios required to get a 700 lb. motorcycle off the line at a smart pace. The big thing about this tranny is the overdrive 6th gear with a ratio of .89:1. That can mean lower vibrations levels, a quieter ride, lower engine wear and less gas consumption for the touring rider.
In the 5-speed tranny, the big gears slide across to change from gear to gear. Big heavy gears have inertia; once you get them moving they want to stay moving and stop with a thud. In this baby, smaller, lighter rings are moved between gears, making the gear change lighter and sweeter, while keeping the reliability of the large gears for power transmission.
The tranny is available in black wrinkle as well as silver and chrome, and for those who don't want to blow the wad, you can even buy it as a gear set. If you work that way, installation time is reduced as the old tranny case stays in the motorcycle.
Now how strong is this thing? Well, it has been tested on the big 103-inch engines for a zillion miles and has come up trumps, just like the old durable 5-speed.
Although not cheap, the tranny can add a lot of pleasure to your ride, and if you have it fitted at the time of purchase of your new bike, it will have a 24-month warranty. If you fit it to a 2003 or older m/c, you still get a 12-month warranty.
