Go Synthetic - You'll Love the Results - SYN3, The Facts!
Just to set the record straight, all lubricants tested and approved by Harley-Davidson Motor Company are great choices for your motorcycle. However, if you are willing to do a little experimentation, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the new synthetic lubricant that was introduced in 2003. This lubricant was developed exclusively for Harley-Davidson and Buell engines, transmissions and chain case components. After three years of intensive research and testing, this lubricant can only be described one way: a high performance synthetic lubricant.
If you want to change your engine lubricant to SYN3, you can do so at any time - before, during or after the break-in period. Beginning with the 2004 model year, CVO (custom vehicle operations program) model engines, primary chain cases and transmissions will be shipped already featuring SYN3. If you want to change your own engine lubricant, you can safely drain your engine of its existing lubricant (flushing is not required), then top up with SYN3 - be careful not to overfill, as extra oil may find the wrong place to reside and cause you problems! Similarly it is quite safe for your motorcycle to switch back to H-D 360 or other lubricant following use of SYN3 if you so wish. Of course, you could save yourself a lot of trouble and just get your trusty Harley-Davidson service department to do the job for you.
Now some of you old timers might be asking, "How come Harley-Davidson Motor Company is now promoting a synthetic lubricant when for years they warned against them?" It's simple. Before the extensive research was done exclusively for Harley-Davidson and Buell on SYN3, the quality and consistency of synthetic lubricants just couldn't be relied upon. It's also interesting to note that unless you are talking about crude, out of the ground, black gold in the first place, you have yourself a synthetic "altered" product with most other lubricants anyway! No chemistry lesson will be given here, but suffice it to say it's a complicated matter. The long and the short of it all is that SYN3 can provide you with reduced oil consumption, improved wear protection, high temperature stability and definitely superior overall performance.
So, as you get ready for this season's touring, take a stroll down to your local dealer and have a chat with the service department about the benefits of SYN3

ja tässä ote tuolta saitilta:
Can SYN3 be used in Shovelhead engines, 4-speed Big Twin transmissions, 4-speed XL transmissions/primaries, or early Shovelhead 5-speed transmissions?
Harley-Davidson has not tested SYN3 in these engine, primary, and transmission configurations. There are a multitude of tests that must be completed before a lubricant can be certified for use in Harley-Davidson engines, primary chain cases, and transmissions. Many of these tests require that the components be brand new and then be dimensionally inspected (blueprinted) before testing begins. These steps must be done in order to measure the wear on each part.
We were not able to procure the required quantity of new Shovelhead engines, Big Twin 4-speed transmissions, and pre-Evolution XL engine assemblies; therefore we were not able to conduct all of the testing required for validation. SYN3 is approved for '86 - '90 4-speed engines and transmissions.
